Understanding E-Safety Inspections in NSW
If you own a vehicle in New South Wales, there is a good chance you will need an e-safety inspection at some point. Commonly known as a Pink Slip, this inspection is a mandatory safety check required for most vehicles that are five years old or older when it comes time to renew your registration. The inspection is designed to ensure that your vehicle meets minimum safety standards and is roadworthy, protecting both you and other road users. Here is everything you need to know about the process.
What is a Pink Slip? — A Pink Slip is the informal name for an Electronic Safety Inspection Report, issued through the NSW e-safety check system. When your vehicle passes the inspection, the result is submitted electronically to Transport for NSW, and you can then proceed with renewing your registration. The system replaced the old paper-based safety check process and is now fully digital, which means results are recorded instantly and there is no physical pink slip to carry around. You will receive a receipt from the inspection station, and the pass result will appear in the Service NSW system when you go to renew.
When Do You Need One? — In NSW, all light vehicles — cars, SUVs, utes, and small trucks — require an e-safety inspection once they reach five years of age. After that, you need a fresh inspection each year before you can renew your registration. If you are buying or selling a used vehicle, the seller is typically expected to provide a valid safety inspection. Vehicles that have been unregistered for a period will also need an inspection before they can be re-registered. It is worth noting that brand new vehicles and those under five years old are exempt from the annual inspection requirement.
What Gets Inspected? — The e-safety inspection covers all the critical safety systems on your vehicle. The mechanic will check your braking system including pads, rotors, brake lines, and the handbrake. Tyres are inspected for tread depth, damage, and correct sizing. The steering system is checked for excessive play, worn components, and fluid leaks. All external lights must be working correctly — headlights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators, and reversing lights. The windscreen must be free of cracks that obstruct the driver's vision, and wipers must be in working order. Seatbelts are tested for proper operation and retraction. The suspension is inspected for worn bushes, leaking shocks, and damaged components. The exhaust system is checked for leaks and excessive noise, and the vehicle structure is examined for rust or damage that could compromise safety.
How to Prepare Your Car — Before bringing your vehicle in for an e-safety inspection, there are a few simple things you can do to improve your chances of passing first time. Check that all your lights are working — this is one of the most common reasons for failure, and replacing a blown globe is a quick and cheap fix. Make sure your tyres have adequate tread depth — the legal minimum in NSW is 1.5mm across the full width of the tyre. Test your windscreen wipers and top up the washer fluid. Check that your seatbelts click in and retract properly. If you know your brakes are worn or your car has been pulling to one side, it is better to have those issues addressed before the inspection rather than failing and having to come back.
How Long Does It Take and What Does It Cost? — A standard e-safety inspection typically takes between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the vehicle and any issues found. The NSW government sets a maximum fee for safety inspections, which is currently around $42 for light vehicles. If your vehicle fails the inspection, the mechanic will provide a report detailing what needs to be repaired. You then have 14 days to have the repairs completed and return for a free re-inspection of the failed items.
